LABIRINTI: we’re now halfway there…

GiolliCoop is taking part in the Labirinti project, funded under the call for proposals Liberi Di Crescere – Fondazione Con i Bambini, from June 2024 to June 2028.

The project’s activities are aimed at the minor sons and daughters of detained persons, both inside and outside prison.

The lead organisation is Officina SocialMeccanica Catania, whilst Giolli, as a partner, is responsible for providing training to groups of prison police officers.

This is a very important yet often overlooked element that can significantly alter the experience of children in relation to their parents’ imprisonment and the prison itself where they are held.

We have concluded the first series of meetings with the team of prison officers at Catania’s ‘Piazza Lanza’ Prison, and the experience has been both challenging and rewarding.

To our great surprise, we have helped the institutional figures most involved in surveillance to rediscover their educative role, recognising conflicts and limitations, and uncovering the projections and reflections of their own experiences as parents.

At the end of the summer, we will be travelling to Palermo and Sciacca.

The project, in its broadest sense, is divided into four key phases:

  • MINOTAUR, covering all activities directed at the minor children of prisoners that take place within the prison.
  • THESEUS, covering activities directed at the minor children of prisoners outside the prison.
  • ARIANNA, covering activities directed at significant adults.
  • DEDALUS, covering pilot activities aimed at promoting a culture of inclusion for the children of prisoners amongst the general public, starting with a different perspective on prison.
